Es besteht ein erhöhtes Risiko für Fehldiagnosen, wenn zwischen dem Patienten und dem medizinischen Personal Sprachbarrieren bestehen.

Misdiagnosis is likely to lead to malpractice.

Komplikationen

Besides malpractice, lack of or incorrect communication itself can lead to complications for the patient.

Verlängerter Krankenhausaufenthalt

Patienten mit eingeschränkten Sprachkenntnissen bleiben normalerweise länger in der Notaufnahme (ca. 30 Minuten) und 4 Tage länger in Krankenhäusern als der durchschnittliche Patient.

Häufigere Wiederaufnahmen

Patienten mit eingeschränkten Sprachkenntnissen neigen 60% häufiger sich in die Notaufnahme zu begeben als der Durchschnittspatient. Es besteht ein um 50% höheres Risiko, dass diese Patienten ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert werden, und eine um 20% höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass sie innerhalb von 72 Stunden nach der Entlassung wieder ärztliche Hilfe aufsuchen.

Erhöhte Kosten

Misdiagnosis, malpractice, complications, prolonged hospitalization and increased readmissions all increase costs for healthcare providers. In addition, healthcare professionals are likely to take more samples and do more research on patients who do not master the language
